I’ve been struck lately by the power of the concept of repertoire. As I teach string games to children, I encourage them to think of the figures they know as forming a repertoire, and to assess which tricks they can do as well as teach. Then we develop group goals for having the class have a certain set of games in its repertoire, and to enlist each other in helping the group to reach that goal. These ideas are quite powerful when transferred to other areas of study, yet simple to explain and grasp with string.
