I think Karma is a pretty good way to conceptualize it. Pop-psychology concepts such as ‘paying it forward’ or social science ideas like social capital have their place in the discussion, too. The key is to take seriously the concept of community and recognize the necessity of diffuse reciprocity to build and sustain communities. I struggle with how to persuade students away from a consumerist approach to education – “entertain me” “inform me” “grade me” – to a collaborative, mutually supportive orientation. Good citizenship, yes. Part of it is leading by example, or modeling. I’ll continue to be open to good advice and ideas.
