MySpace at School Watch – update

story link
So it continues.

  • Waden [the mother] said she made clear on a consent form at the start of the school year that her 15-year-old daughter was not to be allowed Internet access. But the girl used the school computers to access the Web site MySpace.com, where she met 18-year-old Michael Macbeth.

two ways to read it. You can say “damn you my space! What about the children.” or you can take to heart the lesson that kids that are protected from a thing, and not taught how to deal with a thing, a at greater risk. see blog post over at will richardson

  1. As a mother, my heart breaks for this woman. However, there are many precedents for this sort of situation.

For example – our city has a separate system of paths for cyclists and pedestrians away from the grid roads. The speed limit on the grid roads in some places is as high as 60 and 70 mph. One day, a young pedestrian who had been drinking left the walkway and crossed a gridroad at a busy section. He was hit and killed by a car. The bereaved family immediately called for the prosecution of the driver and the reduction of the speed limit on the grid roads. The argument raged and politicians who stood against the measure were seen as callous.

I don’t know how much the girl in this story had learned about appropriate behaviour online. I’m pretty sure that the pedestrian had been taught basic road safety, but it’s still the same dilemma. Do we change the rules to protect those who choose not to avail themselves of safety precautions? Or do we educate everyone so that they know the consequences of ignoring guidelines, and respect their freedom of choice?

Kneejerk reactions to tragedies do not make for sensible long term solutions.

  2. Set up a certain program on your home computer. Make sure the port is open at your house that it requires. And also make sure the computers at your school have the port open. Like my school has port 80 open. So thats what I will do it through. And if everything is right. You can see your at-home computer screen in a window at the school. Meaning you arent ON myspace.com but your looking at a picture of your home computer…that is on myspace.com 🙂 I cant remember what the program is though. And Once you set it up, you have to know your home IP to type in from the school computer. Ill update this when I know what the program is called.

  3. it says that if you go in to applications and download firefox then on firefox go to myspaceatschool.com then it should work

  4. with all the recent hubbub, myspace has generated a negative connotation where, if you had never heard of the site or knew nothing about how it works, you’d think it was a stomping ground for perverts to get in touch with young children…..what i said may not be entirely wrong, but i find the good far outweighs the bad and i think with better regulation people will start to believe how important something like this could be for children.

  5. Can anyone give me an example where MySpace has been used in the classroom as anything besides an example of social networking?

  6. its really dissapointing knowing that myspace has been blocked in my school; because i go on it all the time; but i dont go on it in lessons just at lunches so its really unfair. does anyone have a alternative website i can access it on? not home.myspace etcc. as they dont work.
    thanks in advance =]]

  7. Rather than spending time trying to find ways to bypass your schools filtering and policies, wouldn’t it make more sense to pursue getting those policies changed? It’s the harder of the two paths, but it’s much less likely to get you banned from the network completely and who knows…you might even enlighten the administration a bit.

  8. C’mon. You can make a stronger argument for MySpace at school than “I need it.” Use your education and tell us what makes you a better student at school for using MySpace. Tell us what skills it helps you develop and how it makes you better educated. If you want to win the debate you need to make the arguement first. (I’m not picking on you…I’m just trying to help you make the case for the site you want access to.)

  9. I speak from the view of a teenager (as I am 16).
Myspace should not be blamed for you or your child’s mistakes.
I thought it was a commonly known fact that if you set your boundaries too high, kids would test the water?
Okay. Any parent who bans their kid from anything- should be prepared for a backlash.
All things considered. This is very much the daughter’s problem.
I’m sick of this age of fear to set the world straight.
    Where every instance has the worst possible result;
When your 15 year old daughter talking to and 18 year old will clearly lead to sex.
    Talk about teenagers growing up?
I think the parents need a wake up call.
    Myspace is NOT evil.

  10. Okay I’m saying this just like Rees because I’m a 16 year old girl…I admit that teenagers make tons of mistakes we just do…but we have to live and learn. I love myspace because you can meet all kinds of different people. If you think that myspace is bad, why don’t you think that pen-pal sites are bad? Your teenage daughter could be pen-pals with someone you don’t even know. I also don’t think it’s about teaching your kid anything people. All of the bad things that happen on myspace aren’t the website’s fault. It’s your child’s. Seriously I know that when people message me (guys) things like “hey sexy, you look good we should talke more often” I block them from contacting me. it’s common sense. You’re kids end up in these situations because they like the attention. Myspace is completely safe as long as you, use your head. That being said I sympathize that your daughter met an 18 year old when she was 15…but REES that doesn’t mean it’s going to lead to sex! I was 15 when I dated an 18 year old. He was my first love…I did lose my virginity to him but only after we had been together for a while. I did what I did because I was in love…and because I was truely in love…I don’t regret anything about my decision. The bottom line is that you have to give your kids room to grow up! just because we are young doesnt make us stupid. I’m a better person because of my decision. After we broke up I knew what love felt like. I made another decision to get water baptized. After that I felt completely pure…like I hadn’t been touched or even kissed. I plan to stay that way until I get married. Kids grow up. we do…a 15 year old is so much more mature than you give them credit for. I’m only 16…almost 17 and instead of partying I’m focusing on school. I’m focusing on me instead of guys. We do mature and we do understand things that you don’t think we do. I’m a model citizen. I’m really strong in my faith Christianity. I’m the one that drags my mom to church every sunday…not the other way around. And guess what? I’m not some dork who doesn’t have a social life…I’m really popular, but while my friends party I look for more. So dont think that a 15 year old with an 18 year old will lead to sex. It could be the best thing to ever happen to them. I don’t think sleeping around is okay but if you love the person parents should let it go. Thats all there is to it. Let it go. Let your kid grow up. Instead of making your child hurt and making them push away from you just give them birth control or something. It doesn’t make them a slut but it does help them to grow up safely. They are still your little children…you just have to have faith in them. Trust them. Myspace isn’t evil and it shouldn’t be talked about that way. I’m sorry but it really makes me angry when people like some of you think that we have no moral values as teenagers. Some people like me have greater moral values than some of you. And for the record…because I know that someone is going to bring it up…I regret my decision to have sex at age 15, but I don’t regret that it was with him. I love him…I still love him. My parents didn’t have to tell him to get lost though because I realized the error of my ways. I’m purified now…I’ll never regain my innocence, but I can and have regained my self worth. If he came around now I wouldn’t give it up to him, but I would look him in the eyes and watch him walk away. 15 year olds ARE capable of loving so this is just my request to all of you parents…I know you may not like it, but just make sure your child is safe and don’t make up their minds for them. Trust me you’ll do more damage than good. Just trust your children. Please don’t you want to prevent your child from getting their heart broken? Well forbidding them to see someone isn’t the way. You will probably break your child’s heart. Teens need to live and learn so that they can grow. Bring your teen’s boyfriend around the house. make sure they are up to your standards but don’t force love to walk out of your childs life. It doesn’t end that quickly. I won’t even fall for guys I normally would. They have to prove their worth to me. I respect myself and guys have to try really hard if they wanna date me because I don’t want another teenage heartbreak. It isn’t worth it. If any of you want to see what I’m all about and how I’m qualified to make these decisions check out my myspace at http://www.myspace.com/bailey_prep

trust me…just trust them. you can’t live their lives for them..but you can make sure they are safe. having them delete their myspace isn’t the way. Just have them be selective about their friends.

  11. WHO DO U GET ON MYSPACE AT SCHOOL IF U CANT GO ON UR PAGE WHEN U PUT UR EMAIL AND PASS WORD SO HOW U COULD U GET IN TO CHECK UR MESSAGES

  12. we should be alousd to view myspace in school becouse even though some people abuse it some people its the onlly place we can check it this is crap

  13. i think that skool is dumb to block myspace. they need to teach us to use this kinda shit like that email and m-s. but then they block them..if you find a way in at skool thet actually works let me kno.

  15. Shouldn’t you be more worried about education than entertainment? geez. The government funds those computers. If they want to block them, that’s their choice. But I do believe that special computers should be made availible with unblocked sites for free time. But stop saying you “need” myspace. It’s not a necesity, it’s a want. And as long as the government is funding computers, you’re going to have to deal with getting on your myspace at home. My school is one that blocked Proxys. If kids had been smart and erased the history, the teachers would’ve never blocked proxys. But you had to get on certain ones. Some would let you view things, but not sign in.. it sucked. I have been without internet for two weeks at my house. So no myspace for two weeks. it sucks, but it’s life. Deal with it.

  16. i think that they should unblock myspace.com….if they have xanga.com unblocked…..they should have myspace.com….and i think that the kids should have their own frredom….on myspace….instead of the school board blocking it…..why block it….there is nothin wrong with it…it dont show anything wrong….but that is just me….

  17. and here is another comment….I HATE THAT THEY BLOCK MYSPACE AT SCHOOL!!!!!!!!it gets on my nerves….but u know that us kids…cant do anyting on mysoace….cause of the stupid board of education blocked it….i swear i hate how they do that….jsut think of the kids…that dont have computers….at shcool is the only time that they can get on it….so i think that is pretty stupid and retarded…but anyways…i think that i am gonna write tjhe board of education…and say..look here buddy..i think that u should unblock myspace.com….if they ask why…i am gonna say because….us the kids should be able to get on myspace….and u are stupid for blocking it…well that is my opinion..thanx for ur time…i think that i am gonna go write the right now….HAHA…..TEEHEE….LOL…

  18. Guys, whats the point in typing in comments here, everyone who types comments on this website is a dikey loser who has no lives!!!!!!! Oh, and Myspace sux @$$, just like you!!!!! Dont bother replieing, cuz Im NEVER coming back here again, cuz it didnt help me get into myspace at all.
